When to Call: Symptoms That Point to Different Problems
Single drain slow or clogged — fixture trap or branch line. Almost always hair, soap scum, food particles, or grease.
Multiple drains slow at the same time — main sewer line problem, not individual fixture clogs. Especially obvious if flushing a toilet causes water to back up in a shower. This needs a camera inspection.
Recurring clog in the same drain — the clog isn’t fully clearing. Hydro jetting clears the entire pipe interior; snaking does not.
Water backing up into shower or tub when you flush — main sewer line is blocked. Stop using all water in the house and call.
Drain Cleaning vs. Hydro Jetting: Which Method, and Why
Drain Snaking (Mechanical Auger) — $150–$500
A flexible cable with a cutting head spins through the pipe, punching through or grabbing the obstruction. Fast, targeted, and effective for localized clogs in single fixtures.
Use snaking when: Single slow drain, clog within 25 feet of a cleanout, pipe is in good condition, problem is something solid (hair, food, foreign object).
Don’t use snaking for: Recurring main line clogs, root intrusion (roots grow back fast), heavy grease buildup, or anything in a pipe over 50 feet from access.
Hydro Jetting — $600–$1,400
A high-pressure water jet (up to 4,000 PSI) blasts through the pipe in a controlled pattern, scouring the entire interior wall. Removes grease, mineral scale, root masses, sludge, and accumulated debris all the way down to bare pipe.
Use hydro jetting when: Recurring clogs in the same line, main sewer line is involved, roots have invaded the pipe, heavy grease buildup, or preventive cleaning that lasts 2–3 years.
Don’t use hydro jetting on: Older clay tile pipes, severely corroded cast iron, or any pipe a camera shows is structurally compromised.
Video Camera Inspection — $200–$400
A high-definition camera runs through the line so we can see exactly what’s there before recommending a method. Reveals the actual cause, pipe material and condition, and location of any structural damage. Footage is yours to keep.
What Causes Drain Problems in Plano Homes
- Grease and cooking oils. The #1 kitchen drain killer. By the time water backs up, the pipe is often 70%+ blocked. Hydro jetting is the only method that clears it completely.
- Hair, soap scum, and skin care products. Bathroom drains accumulate hair at the P-trap. A mesh drain strainer prevents 80% of bathroom clogs.
- Tree roots in sewer lines. Plano’s older neighborhoods have mature oaks, pecans, and cottonwoods within reach of sewer lines. Common in homes with cast iron or clay tile sewer lines (typically pre-1985).
- Hard water mineral scale. Plano’s water at 15–20 grains per gallon deposits calcium and magnesium scale on pipe interiors. Hydro jetting removes it; snaking doesn’t.
- Non-flushable items. “Flushable” wipes, paper towels, dental floss. These cause blockages that won’t dissolve.

What You Can Do Yourself (and When to Stop)
Worth trying: Plunger on a toilet or shallow sink clog. Pulling hair from a bathroom drain with a $5 plastic drain snake. Enzyme drain cleaner for slow drains monthly. Hot water and dish soap on light grease.
Stop and call: Caustic chemical drain cleaners (damage pipes, rarely fix the underlying problem). Renting a sewer snake (underpowered, frequently get stuck). Anything involving the main sewer cleanout.
