Acoustic and Electronic Leak Detection Under Concrete

Technician using headphones and an acoustic ground microphone on a concrete floor

Before anyone tunnels or breaks concrete, we listen. Acoustic sensors pick up the sound of pressurized water escaping under a slab; electronic tools help follow the line. Pinpoint first, dig second.

The fastest way to turn a small slab leak into a large construction project is to dig before you know where the water is. Acoustic and electronic leak detection exist to prevent that. This article explains the tools — it is not a rewrite of signs of a slab leak, which covers what you notice as a homeowner. For service, see leak detection and slab leak repair.

Acoustic listening

Pressurized water escaping a pipe makes sound. On a quiet slab, sensitive microphones and ground sensors amplify that sound so a trained tech can walk a grid and home in on the loudest point. Soft finishes, ambient noise, and very small leaks make the job harder; experience still matters more than the brand name on the headphones.

Electronic helpers

Depending on pipe material and layout, we may use amplifiers, correlators, or tracing tools to follow a line’s path under the slab. Remodel PEX and mixed materials can limit some tracers — as on the Dallas hallway cold-line job — which is why acoustic results and meter isolation stay in the toolkit.

How it fits with other tests

  • Meter observation proves water is moving.
  • Hot vs cold isolation narrows which line — see hot line vs cold line.
  • Hydrostatic testing confirms a section cannot hold pressure — see what a hydrostatic test shows.
  • Acoustic/electronic detection marks the floor before access begins.

After the mark

A blue tape X on the floor is not decoration — it is the handoff from detection to repair planning. From there we talk tunneling vs break-out and whether the rest of the copper system suggests a larger plan.

Frequently asked questions

Can detection find every leak on the first visit?

The loudest leak is usually located first. Quieter leaks may appear only after the primary one is repaired and the system is re-checked.

Will you cut tile to detect a leak?

Detection aims to mark the slab without destructive hunting. Access comes after we know where to open.

Does electronic detection work on PEX?

Some methods are material-sensitive. We adapt with acoustics, isolation tests, and the tools that fit the piping we find.

Is detection separate from repair?

Diagnosis and repair can happen on a planned visit together when appropriate, but you still approve written pricing before repair work starts.
