Is the Pipe Frozen or Already Burst?
Turn on a faucet served by the affected line. No flow at all — the pipe is frozen but may still be intact. Water spraying or running from a wall or ceiling — it has already burst. Shut off the main water supply immediately and call us.
What to Do While We’re On the Way (Frozen, Not Burst)
- Open the faucet served by the frozen line. As ice thaws, having the faucet open relieves pressure and shows you when flow returns.
- Apply gentle, indirect heat if you can safely access the pipe. A hair dryer on LOW, warm (not hot) towels, or a heating pad wrapped around exposed pipe. Work from the faucet end back toward the frozen section.
- Never use an open flame, propane torch, or heat gun on frozen pipes. You risk igniting wall material, boiling water inside the pipe, or melting fittings.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks against exterior walls to let household air reach the pipes.
- Know where your main shutoff is in case the pipe bursts during the thaw.
Why North Texas Pipes Freeze
DFW homes are designed for hot summers, not sustained cold snaps. Supply lines run through unconditioned attics, exterior walls, garages, and crawl spaces. When a hard freeze hits — below 20°F for four or more hours — those uninsulated runs freeze faster than homes in colder climates. Winter Storm Uri (February 2021) caused an average of $27,000 in burst-pipe damage per affected Texas home.
How We Handle Frozen Pipe Repairs
Safe thawing. We use professional equipment to safely thaw the frozen section without damaging fittings or building steam pressure inside the pipe.
Burst detection. During thaw, we monitor the pipe for splits or pinhole failures that may not be immediately visible.
Immediate repair. If the freeze has caused a split, we repair it on the spot — cut out the damaged section, replace with matching material, pressure-test, and restore water service.
Root cause inspection. We identify how the pipe got cold enough to freeze — inadequate insulation, disconnected heat tape, unprotected attic run — so it doesn’t happen next winter.
Freeze Prevention for Next Winter
- Insulate all attic pipe runs before November. Pre-slit foam pipe insulation is inexpensive and takes an afternoon.
- Install self-regulating heat tape on vulnerable exterior-wall sections.
- Let faucets drip on nights forecast below 20°F. Moving water resists freezing.
- Know your main shutoff. A 30-second practice run now saves significant damage later.
