Rust-colored hot water, a rumbling tank, water pooling at the base, and inconsistent temperature are the warning signs most likely to precede a water heater failure in DFW. Most can be caught and addressed before they become emergencies.
Water heaters rarely fail without warning. The warnings are easy to miss because they often develop slowly — a little more sediment noise each month, a degree or two less heat. Here are the seven signs worth acting on.
1. Rust or Discoloration in Hot Water
If hot water runs rust-colored but cold water runs clear, the corrosion is inside your tank. Once the tank is corroding internally, replacement is the only fix. A failing anode rod is an earlier-stage warning with the same symptom — an anode rod replacement can extend tank life if caught in time.
2. Rumbling, Popping, or Banging Sounds
DFW's moderately hard water drops sediment into every tank. As it compacts, the burner heats through the layer and you hear it. The sounds mean efficiency is dropping and tank lifespan is shortening. An annual flush prevents this; once the sediment has compacted, a flush at a late stage carries its own risks.
3. Water Around the Tank Base
Any moisture at the base warrants immediate attention. Small weeps often precede full tank failures. Don't ignore it hoping it will stop.
4. Inconsistent Water Temperature
Hot water that runs lukewarm or fluctuates often points to a failing thermostat or heating element — both repairable on tanks under 8 years old. On older units, treat it as a system-level warning.
5. Running Out of Hot Water Faster Than Usual
Sediment displaces tank capacity. A 50-gallon tank with 10 gallons of settled sediment is functionally a 40-gallon unit.
6. Pressure Relief Valve Dripping
The T&P valve releases pressure when the tank overheats. A dripping valve may mean the valve is failing (replace it) or the tank is running too hot (check thermostat). A T&P valve that won't reseal after being tested needs replacement.
7. Age Over 10 Years
In DFW's hard water, tank water heaters over 10 years old without a documented flush history are statistically approaching failure. Schedule an assessment — call 682-284-0966.
