Type L vs. Type M Copper Pipe: What DFW Homeowners Need to Know

Type L copper has thicker walls and is the right choice for underground and slab applications in DFW. Type M is thinner and less expensive, appropriate for above-ground interior supply lines. In DFW slab repairs, any plumber who uses Type M in a reroute rather than Type L is cutting a corner.

If you're having slab leak repair done in DFW, the choice between Type L and Type M copper matters more than almost any other decision in the repair — and most homeowners don't know to ask about it.

The Difference

n

Both Type L and Type M are standard copper alloy, color-coded for easy identification (Type L = blue markings, Type M = red markings). The difference is wall thickness. Type L has walls roughly 50% thicker than Type M at the same nominal diameter. That thickness matters when pipes are subject to soil movement, pressure cycling, and burial in concrete — all three of which happen in every DFW slab installation.

Why It Matters in DFW

n

DFW's clay soil movement puts mechanical stress on buried pipes that above-ground installations don't experience. Thinner Type M walls fatigue faster under cyclic bending stress. The extra copper in Type L is exactly what buys longevity in a high-movement soil environment. Texas plumbing code allows Type M for some applications, but the minimum-code answer is not the same as the right-for-DFW answer.

What to Ask Your Plumber

n

Before any slab reroute, ask: "What type of copper are you using for the reroute?" The correct answer for a DFW slab application is Type L. If you hear "Type M" or "whatever's available," that's a conversation worth pushing on. Staggs Plumbing uses Type L copper on all slab applications. Call 682-284-0966.
