How Hard Water Affects Your DFW Plumbing — and What Actually Helps

Frozen Water Pipes — Staggs Plumbing, Plano & DFW

Dallas-Fort Worth water is moderately hard, typically in the 150–250 mg/L range depending on your municipality and the season. That is not extreme, but it is enough to matter over years.

What moderately hard water actually does

Calcium and magnesium deposits build up inside water heater tanks, on showerheads, inside faucet aerators, and at pipe joints. The effects are gradual. You notice them as reduced water pressure, shorter appliance life, and higher energy bills on your water heater.

Water heaters are the most affected appliance

A tank water heater in moderately hard water loses 10–20% of its efficiency over time as sediment accumulates. Annual flushing extends tank life and keeps energy costs down. Staggs recommends a flush every 12 months for DFW homes on city water.

What actually helps

  • Annual water heater flush — removes sediment before it hardens. Most cost-effective first step.
  • Salt-based water softener — effective, but requires ongoing maintenance and salt cost. Best for homes with well water or very high hardness.
  • Template-assisted crystallization (TAC) systems — salt-free, low maintenance, effective at reducing scale without adding sodium. Good middle option for moderately hard city water.

What doesn’t help

Magnetic descalers. The research doesn’t support them for residential plumbing at DFW hardness levels.
